The Impact of COVID-19 on Student Veterans and The G.I. Bill

As COVID-19 continues to affect Americans all over the country, some already compromised individuals are feeling even more of a pinch due to all the shutdowns and reduction of available services.

With so many people out of work, making ends meet has become nearly impossible for some.

Food pantries are running thin, leaving many dealing with food insecurity and vulnerable populations requiring more aid as the days go on.

Sadly, that means our veterans are being hit especially hard and in need of our assistance more than ever.

These closings have also affected college and university students across the country, including student veterans relying on the GI Bill for their schooling, housing, and other financial assistance.

Protection for Student Veterans Under the GI Bill

Fortunately, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Congress have addressed the issue and signed legislation on March 21, 2020 that protects veteran students and the aid they depend on to survive.

The CARES Act (H.R.748) signed on March 27 added additional protections for veterans and the VA added additional measures on April 3, 2020 that protect student veterans, and veterans overall.

This legislation and benefits are providing the VA with federal funding to continue supporting all veterans, bringing forth many protections for our student veterans during the COVID-19 pandemic including:

  • Suspension of all actions on veteran student loan debts and collection actions by the VA throughout the crisis and extending the repayment schedules of current student loan debts.
  • All in-person studies that have been converted to online studies will still be financially supported by the GI Bill.
  • Student veterans enrolled in work-study programs will still receive support from the VA.
  • Student veterans are also eligible for other financial assistance relating to schooling and other financial impacts related to COVID-19 as well as the standard benefits already provided by the CARES act.

Brazos Valley Cares Is Here To Help

Through all of this, Brazos Valley Cares is standing strong in offering much-needed help to our area veterans in the form of financial help, guidance with VA and student veteran assistance, and more.

Our Emergency Fund exists to help our veterans get through tough times like these, especially now that COVID-19 has complicated our lives in so many ways.

BVC Needs Your Support More Than Ever

Brazos Valley Cares is a 501(c)3 charity funded solely by the donations of local citizens and businesses who want to help us assist our veterans.

COVID-19 has put enormous strain on our veterans and on our emergency fund, which is quickly running out of funding.

Being forced to reschedule our major fundraiser Steak Your Support event due to COVID-19 concerns, we are struggling and in dire need of donations from the community so we can continue to care for the veterans who rely on our support.

If you are able to donate, please do via our website here.

We thank you for your support and concern about our area veterans.

Steak Your Support Rescheduled to August 8, 2020!
